Interview with the CEO of TAF: from a small workshop to a global leader in aluminum structures
TAF – Truss Aluminium Factory, founded in 1998, has evolved from a small workshop in the Czech Republic to a global leader in aluminum truss manufacturing. With a presence in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the United Kingdom, it stands out for its focus on constant innovation, superior quality, and personalized customer service.
When was your company founded, and what is your entrepreneurial background?
Well, before starting the company, I had already gained some experience with running businesses in completely different areas. However, one of these businesses did involve handling, cutting, and welding metals. Somehow, I saw an opportunity there. I knew it was not going to be easy but fortune favors the brave. In 1998, I rented a small workshop that was not so far away from our current production plant and hired the first employee. By the way, he still works for the company now. While he was dealing with materials and production, I was working on getting us some orders and jobs. Sometimes, when it was necessary, I gave him a hand in the workshop. So, we were working side-by-side on small contracts that we had. It’s amusing to look back on how much we’ve achieved since those times. As it usually goes, we had some struggles at the start, but people eventually got to know about us. I would say the most important thing at that time was my focus on export, i.e. contacting German, Austrian, Swiss, and Italian companies and hoping to get their interest, trust, and consequently, orders. Looking back now, that was really important.
Where can your product be found? In which countries and markets?
Honestly, I tend to think that our products can be found all around the world. However, there are some areas of the world that we have not reached yet, but, for sure, we are working on it. Our headquarters and production plant are in Olomouc, Czech Republic, with another three offices for distribution, sales, and customer service around the world.
In 2009, we established TAF USA LLC, with its office and warehouse located in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It serves markets in North, Central, and South America. A few years later, we managed to find partners in China, which led to the founding of TAF Hong Kong. The most recent addition to our TAF family is the TAF UK office and warehouse in Walsall, West Midlands, United Kingdom. Geographically speaking, our products can be found in Europe, America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, of course. Not bad I would say.”
What advantages does your brand offer compared to your competitors?
Good question. I have the outmost respect for everyone in our field of aluminum truss production. On the other hand, there are many companies trying to increase their share of the market, but only a few made it to a professional level and produce high quality products.
I’m happy that TAF is seen as one of the companies in this group. In fact, we see ourselves as one of the driving forces in the industry. High quality products, outstanding customer service, and a wide product range, together with after sales services, are absolute necessities.
For me, the key to our success lies in three very important areas. It might come as a surprise, but first is family. By family, I mean that we still consider ourselves a family business. In other words, relationships matter both inside and outside the company. The next would be flexibility, as in the way we always treat the projects of each customer and client on an individual basis. That means they have full access to our in-house design & engineering team, which can provide them with just about anything they need regarding the manufacturing of custom truss or helping to bring their bespoke projects to life. The third one would be constant innovation. The world is always evolving and so must our company. We are cutting down our environmental footprint every year, while also investing time and money in making improvements to our production line. You might not know it, but TAF is the first company in the industry that developed a fully robotic station for truss production, which is currently up and running. Cutting edge innovation in all aspects of the company is what gives us the upper hand.
Who is your product targeted to, and what are its uses?
Aluminum has become a very popular material in many different fields. Aluminum truss, as such, represents a very versatile and user-friendly modular system. Given these characteristics, its applications are almost endless. The primary feature of truss is to serve as a supportive structure for any kind of equipment. Throughout the years, and with the development of different truss shapes and sizes, it has also entered the fields of design, construction, architecture, sports, and many others. The range of applications is really huge, from light, decorative structures, such as exhibition stands and retail displays, to ones that require strong and safe support of higher loads, such as LED frames, ninja and obstacle courses, small to medium-sized structures for live events, and the highest capacity roofs for supporting sound and lights for extremely technical, highly demanding concerts. To go back to your question, our target customers come from all fields of human activities. We have pub or shop owners asking us for a couple of segments to hang lights and speakers, but also factory halls that need to be equipped with kilometers of truss for various purposes or special applications of customized truss structures on boats and so on.
How many divisions or categories do you have? What range do you cover?
Well, that is another interesting one. For now, we can proudly say that our product portfolio is really extensive and includes thousands of items. Truss is the largest part of our portfolio and can be divided into three main categories based on the type of connection – quicklock / spigoted truss, bolted truss, and fork truss. In addition to truss, we have over 20 main product categories that include towers, roof systems, LED supports, barriers, ramps, stages, etc., as well as many accessories to go with our main products.
We provide a full range of truss products for the entertainment industry, while also expanding our portfolio in different directions to reach other industries, such as construction, architecture, design, sports, and so on.
What price range does your catalog fall under?
Considering our complete portfolio, I would say there are products available for a few Euros, such as accessories, but also fully developed and complicated structures for projects that cost tens of thousands of Euros. Compared to our competition, however, we have always been considered a company that provides a good price to quality ratio. So, I would say we offer high performance products for competitive market prices.
Do you offer an after-sales service?
“Yes, of course. That is a must in our line of work. We are happy to work on large scale projects, as well as others, where you always have to be ready to provide assistance to your customer. It can go smoothly, without any hiccups, but then, for whatever reason, a need for some adjustments is necessary and you can’t say to your customer that you don’t care. As I mentioned earlier – relationships matter. We have a highly qualified sales team that has the support of both the engineering office and our very experienced production managers, so we are ready to solve any issues that our customers could face.
How can we learn more about your catalog and purchase system?
A PDF version of our catalogue can be downloaded for free on the TAF website, as well as on the websites of our UK and US offices. All of our websites are easy to navigate and provide important information about our products. You can also reach us by phone, e-mail, or through our social media accounts, as we are active on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X. So, there are many ways you can contact us.
Is there any important information about your company that you would like to share with us?
It’s true that we have come a long way from a small, two-man workshop to a company with a worldwide reach and over 160 employees, with its own brand and high-quality products. We cherish our business relationships and some of our customers have been with us from the very start. We have grown from a simple truss supply company into one that can deal with massive projects all over the world. We did not go through this process by acquiring other companies, but by building our own company step-by-step and finding the right people. We did it the hard way and that provides you with lots of experience and skills to deal with whatever the future has in store for you.
